Eid al-Fitr Ceasefire with Taliban and the Prospects of Peace in Afghanistan



The Department of Peace and Conflict Studies of NCPR at Kabul University with the support of its research team conducted a research through interviews and media observation on a one-sided government ceasefire which was announce on June 7th 2018 that coincided with 23rd of Ramadan, with Taliban; it was observed by Taliban only for three days of the Eid and it was a two-sided ceasefire. The ceasefire came up as a result of cooperation among international stakeholders as well as, the internal parties to Afghanistan war which was an important event in the violent conflict of Afghanistan. The significance of this two-sided ceasefire can be highlighted by the fact that it was an unprecedented event in the recent history of this conflict and that it was observed and respected all over the country by all parties.  It was welcomed by the public with celebration and joy.  However there were different views; some considered it a dramatic and unpredictable for the people, some other layers in the government and international actors considered it as a predicted and planned event….continued…
